Scugog Soccer “A Cut Above” Thanks to OTF Grant
MPP O’Toole Celebrates $36,000 Grant

Port Perry – On Saturday Sept 6th, 2008 the Scugog Soccer Association took time out from one of their many Soccer Tournaments to host John O’Toole, MPP for Durham who unveiled a new, impressive piece of equipment. Thanks to a $36,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the association has been able to purchase a new tractor and 11’ wide mower to groom their soccer fields. Joining MPP O’Toole to unveil the new tractor was OTF representative, Brian Markle.

“I would like to commend the volunteers in the Scugog Soccer Association for their initiative in acquiring the grass cutting equipment necessary to keep the soccer fields in the best possible condition,” said John O’Toole, MPP for Durham. “This Ontario Trillium Foundation grant will enhance the field and safety conditions for all players.”

In the past few years, the organization has hired a contractor to cut the fields on a weekly basis. A five year cost analysis done by the Club showed a potential savings of a $5,000 annually if the Club cuts its own fields. Those funds can now be used for player, referee and coach development; other equipment purchases; and to keep registration fees low.

“Having our own equipment allows us to cut when, where and how we want, and saves us thousands each year and turf maintenance. It’s a win/win situation. This a text book example of how the Ontario Trillium Foundation helps community based organizations like ours.” added Brian Kavanagh, Scugog Soccer Association President.

“Through 30 years of development, by a long list of volunteers, the club, through the generosity of Scugog Township is blessed to have a facility like this right here in Port Perry. These fields are known all over Durham region as some of best. This grant will ensure we keep them in great shape. “

Established as a not-for-profit organization in 1978 and incorporated in 1999, the Scugog Soccer Association’s has grown to be one of the largest organizations in the township with 850 registered players.

Affiliated with the Ontario Soccer Association and the Durham Region Soccer Association, Scugog Soccer’s mandate is to encourage and develop soccer on all levels through youth and adult programs within the Township of Scugog in a safe, fun, and inexpensive manner. The association runs outdoor house league soccer for youth ages 3-18 and for adult players from May through September, with indoor development through the fall and winter. It also has a growing competitive (rep) division that complete across Durham region.

The Association hosts many events throughout the year including: weekday games in its 14 week season; two of its own house league tournaments for the U4 to U10 divisions; Summer Soccer Camp; Scugog/Uxbridge house league year end tournaments; Durham Boys and Durham Girls year end tournaments; Grade school tournaments and grade school cross country run;
